Cancer Australia’s latest figures put a hard number on a trend most Queenslanders have long suspected: melanoma incidence has climbed dramatically over the past four decades, even as survival outcomes have improved substantially over the same period.

The long-term trend in the data

Age-standardised melanoma incidence rose from 29.6 to 65 cases per 100,000 people between 1982 and 2019, a 120 percent increase. In raw numbers, 2019 alone recorded 15,628 new melanoma diagnoses nationally, split between 9,134 men and 6,494 women.
